May Day Graphics throughout History

The 1st of May signifies many things, including Bealtaine (an ancient celebratory tradition marking the midway point between Spring and Summer).

May 1st has also been recognized for over a century as May Day, or the International Workers’ Day (aka Labour Day in many countries). With origins in the 8-hour day movement in Australia, then spreading to the United States and later to Europe and worldwide, May Day has often marked commemorations and demonstrations in support of worker rights and labor freedoms.

Above are some moments throughout the visual culture history of May Day, with early hand-rendered graphics and more modern depictions from rallies, protests, and recent calls for the recognition of essential labor. (Made for May Day 2021)
