Vintage Public Health Posters from the HIV/AIDS Crisis

World AIDS Day is observed on December 1 each year. Founded in 1988, less than a decade after the onset of the epidemic, it was the first ever global health day. It was conceived as an international day of awareness by what is now the UNAIDS programme, part of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Pictured here are select public health campaign posters from the 1980s and early 1990s, promoting safe sex and harm reduction practises that help prevent the spread of HIV.

These select images are gathered from Creative Commons imagery collected from the Wellcome Collection and the National Library of Medicine (USA) Flickr library. Check out their sites and libraries for more freely viewable medical history images.
